Sidney Snyder, a 35-year-old mother of two, thought it would be a fun and bonding activity to let her 8-year-old daughter, Emma, draw her portrait. She had seen some adorable examples of children’s art on Pinterest and Instagram, and hoped to get a cute and flattering picture of herself to hang on the fridge.
However, as soon as Emma handed her the finished drawing, Sidney’s smile turned into a grimace. The portrait looked nothing like her. In fact, it looked more like a monster than a human being.
Emma had drawn Sidney with a huge head, tiny eyes, a crooked nose, a gaping mouth full of jagged teeth, and a chin that jutted out like a shovel. Her hair was a mess of scribbles, and her ears were sticking out like wings. Her neck was nonexistent, and her body was a blob with four sticks for limbs. She was wearing a dress that looked like a garbage bag, and her feet were bare and dirty.
Sidney tried to hide her disappointment and horror, and praised Emma for her creativity and effort. She thanked her for the portrait, and gave her a hug and a kiss. She then quickly put the drawing on the fridge, hoping that no one else would see it.
But as soon as her husband came home from work, he noticed the portrait and burst out laughing. He asked Sidney if she had lost a bet or something, and teased her about how ugly she looked in the drawing. He took a picture of it and posted it on Facebook, where it got hundreds of likes and comments from his friends and family.
Sidney felt humiliated and hurt by her husband’s mockery and the online reaction. She wondered if Emma really saw her that way, or if she was just bad at drawing. She also wondered if she should get some botox or plastic surgery to improve her appearance.
She decided to take down the portrait from the fridge, and put it in a drawer where no one would find it. She told Emma that she loved her drawing, but that she wanted to keep it safe and special. She then went online and ordered some art supplies for Emma, hoping that with some practice and guidance, she would be able to draw better portraits in the future.
She also ordered some anti-aging cream for herself, just in case.
